The single greatest challenge prospective college students face as they seek to expand their knowledge and job skills through higher education is lack of adequate financial resources. While the tuition for Metropolitan Community College’s top-notch instruction is affordable for some individuals, the dream of a college education remains elusive for far too many high-potential students, simply because of the inability to pay.
Gifts of scholarships from individuals provide opportunities to transform dreams into reality. For many students, scholarships are the only path to accessing an MCC education and are the difference between unrealized potential and a bright future filled with rewarding and fulfilling work. In addition to providing access, scholarships help alleviate the financial burden many students experience upon graduation.
“I was filled with joy when I received notification of my scholarship award. It gave me the opportunity to better myself and also show my children that dreams do come true.”
- Keishla Collins, class of 2012, Certificate in Practical Nursing
Currently, the average student accumulates $35,200 in college-related debt. Scholarships not only defray the cost of college while attending, but also sets graduates on a path free from the burden of repaying a significant amount of debt.
Give the gift of an education.
Named scholarships can be permanently established with a minimum gift of $10,000. The donor works with the MCC Foundation to define how the scholarship benefits MCC students by establishing award criteria and creating a formal scholarship agreement. A student on scholarship would receive an annual award of approximately 5% of the total value of the endowed scholarship, which would be $500 for scholarships funded at the minimum level; this amount increases as the balance of the endowed scholarship increases through market earnings and/or future contributions. Once the scholarship agreement is finalized and the fund is active, updates on the financial performance of the endowed scholarship fund, along with information about the student recipients, are provided to the donor on an annual basis.
“I was proud to accept a donor’s generosity, but there was more pride associated in the fact that someone believed in my academic success.”
- Ashley Landrum, class of 2012, Associate in Arts
MCC’s endowed scholarship program provides for both need- and merit-based scholarships. The endowment investment and spending policy, established by the MCC Foundation Board of Directors, is aimed at preserving the original gift while distributing as annual scholarships only the earnings accumulated through market investment. Accordingly, your legacy gift exists in perpetuity, and over time your fund will grow as annual earnings above and beyond the scholarship distribution amount are reinvested into your scholarship fund.
