The annual Student Art Exhibit and Sale is back. The yearly event gives aspiring MCC - Penn Valley student-artists a chance to showcase their work and possibly win scholarships.

“The Friends of the Carter Art Center is awarding three $300 scholarships towards tuition for the fall of 2007," said Bernadette Torres the Carter Art Center Gallery Director. "Anybody who is a student, who's in the Student Art Show is eligible; they’re based on talent and not financial need."

Dead Sea Scrolls

Click for Story

In 1947, in a cave near the Dead Sea, a Bedouin shepherd discovered jars containing biblical scrolls wrapped in linen. A nearby community called Qumran had once been populated by the Essenes, a culture of monk-like worshippers who probably created the scrolls between the second century B.C. and the first century A.D. They are older than any other surviving biblical manuscripts by about 1000 years.

Several fragments of the Dead Sea Scrolls are currently on display at Union Station. The exhibit is the first in the Midwest, and only the sixth in the United States.

Editorial: Enjoy the Holidays - Any Holidays

Click for story

Every time a major holiday rolls around, the happy sounds are drowned out by the grumbling of cynics. Why, the resentful reasoning goes, should we have certain days set aside to celebrate things that should be on our minds constantly? We should be thankful every day, not just Thanksgiving. We should buy flowers for our significant others whenever the mood strikes us, not only the day that tradition tells us we're supposed to.

It's true that holidays tend to be overblown, and there is sense in the contention that the original meanings are lost in the flurry of Hallmark cards and mall sales. Everyone has had to sit through the saccharine falsity of pre-turkey gratitude. But there are reasons for holidays, and they can be enjoyed despite shallow pretenses and the glossy sheen of commercialism.
