With barely a month to Election Day the political season is in full swing. Many political strategists have concluded that the fate of this race will be the youth vote; hence the presence of the Obama Presidential campaign on the Penn Valley campus.
On Thursday, September 11, 2008, John Scott, Youth Vote Director of Jackson County visited the Penn Valley campus to activate the youth vote and inform interested voters about Democratic Presidential Candidate Sen. Barack Obama.
In recent weeks Scott, along with four other Penn Valley students, has been present on campus registering students to vote and informing them about the importance of this election and their vote. "Barack won the state of Missouri with less than 10,000 votes; don't let anyone tell you that your vote doesn't count" Scott passionately conveys.
The informational session, sponsored by the Black Students Association, drew a large crowd to a fifth floor conference room where Scott provided a brief overview of the campaign which featured a You Tube clip entitled, "Students for Obama."
The premise of the clip was on the role that young people have had in creating change in this country. This seemed appropriate considering the Obama Presidential Campaign slogan is, "Change we need." The showing, clearly purposed in motivating and inspiring those who watch it, seemed to draw a myriad of interested volunteers from the crowd.
Questions soon followed and students inquired about a variety of things, ranging from strategies to get out the vote, how the campaign plans to win Missouri, what measures have been taken to keep the courts out of the election. Scott explained each in thorough detail and went a step further in explaining how students can get involved in the campaign.
Students can volunteer by visiting the Campaign for Change headquarters located at 3100 Gillham Plaza in Kansas City, Missouri. The office is open to volunteers’ every day from 9am to 9pm. They can also visit the campaign website at www.BarackObama.com
Sen. John McCain’s Presidential Campaign has been contacted by Penn Valley to host an informational event on campus. Please be on the look out for dates and times for this event and other political events.
If you live in Kansas City, Missouri and have not yet registered to vote, you can do so at the circulaton desk of the library, in the bookstore, and with various faculty and staff ho have been trained as deputy registrars. The deadline to register is Oct. 8.
