MCC-Penn Valley will celebrate Spring Break during the week of March 17-21. Throughout the week, there will be numerous activities and events held in the greater Kansas City area that students can attend. MCC-Penn Valley will also host events here on campus.
Right before Spring Break, there will be an event titled "You Go Girl." It is part of the Women's History Month Celebration, and will consist of four former MCC-Penn Valley students who have gone on to further their education.
The four featured women proceeded to earn top degrees from prestigious universities. All four are presently working in professional career fields. "The event will be a Q and A discussion," said Melanie Bowman, facilitator. The former alumni will speak on topics including lifestyles, future career choices, and experiences here on campus.
"Even though the central audience is designed for women, men are also welcome," Bowman added. The "You Go Girl" Alumni panel discussion will be held March 12, 2008 from 12-1pm in the Campus Center, Room 503. For more information, contact Bowman at 816.759.4155.
Students interested in theater may want to check out I Love You Because, playing at the American Heartland Theater (in Crown Center, 2450 Grand) during their Spring Break. I Love You Because is a musical comedy about a male writer who discovers that his girlfriend has been unfaithful. The message of the play is to remind people that true love should be unconditional. The New York Times called the musical an "infectiously entertaining show."
I Love You Because will be showing March 7 through April 20, 2008. Ticket prices vary according to specific dates and times. Contact the theater at 816.842.9999 for admission prices.
Kansas City's Union Station is featuring an exhibit called Bodies Revealed (see our review this issue). The exhibit consists of fifteen real, dissected human bodies on display for the education of the general public. Viewers can gaze upon the skeletal, digestive, nervous, respiratory, and circulatory systems of the human body, as well as full-body specimens and early developed fetuses.
"It's probably the most educational show on healthy lifestyles that you could ever visit," said Linda Segebrecht, educational director for Union Station. The Bodies Revealed exhibit will remain open until September 1, 2008. Tickets cost $24 for adults, $19 for children ages 4-12, and special group rates are also available.
Finally, if you are a person who enjoys movies, visit the KC Central Public Library (14 W. 10th St.) where Basketball Diaries, starring the talented, heart-throb actor Leonardo DiCaprio, will be shown. DiCaprio plays a high school basketball star turned heroin addict who ends up on the streets of New York. The film will be shown in the sumptuous, state-of-the-art Stanley H. Durwood Film Vault Theatre, located on the ground level of the library.
Admission is always free for the library's featured films, so even if you're as broke as Spectrum staffers, you'll still have something interesting to do.
Whatever you do during Spring Break, enjoy it and be safe. And be ready to put your thinking caps back on when classes resume.
