You have vacuumed up all of the Dorito crumbs and removed the stench of stale beer from your living room. The hype and hoopla of The Super Bowl is finally over. If spring is your favorite time for sports but you want to get away from the over-commercialization of sports on television, then radio might just be a welcomed alternative.
If the thought of sitting through another production of flashing graphics makes you cringe, then try cranking up that funny looking box that used to belong to your grandparents. And if you're tired of corporate sponsorships for everything from the half-time show to the starting line-ups, then try catching the team of your choice on Marconi's invention.
The college basketball regular season is winding down and, similar to the college football season, there is a buzz of local excitement in the air here in “Kansouri.” The Kansas Jayhawks and the Kansas State Wildcats are both having excellent seasons and are looking to make an impact in the NCAA Tournament.
Both of the sports talk radio stations in Kansas City carry men's basketball. If you're a Wildcats fan, then Sports Radio 810 WHB is the dial position for you. Wyatt Thompson and Stan Weber provide all the play-by-play action on the K-State Sports Network. WHB also carries pre-game and post-game shows as well as coaches' and players' shows.
Freshman forward Michael Beasley has K-State fans salivating. Beasley's dominating play has also caught the attention of the national media. New York Times sports writer Thayer Evans wrote a story about Beasley in November 2007 with the headline: "Perhaps the Best Freshman Player, and Perhaps the Best Player, Period". KCSP, also known as 610 Sports, is the local affiliate for the Kansas Jayhawks. You can hear all of the regular season and post-season games as well as pre-game, post-game and coaches' shows. Bob Davis and Chris Piper do the play-by-play for the games on the Jayhawk Radio Network.
Just about the time college hoops comes to an end, the smell of peanuts and the roar of the crowd take center stage, or center field as it were. March 31 is opening day for Major League Baseball's 2008 season. The Kansas City Royals will open the season on the road in Detroit and will play their first home game on April 8 versus the New York Yankees.
For the past few seasons WHB has been the flagship station for the Royals Radio Network, but at the end of the 2007 season the rights were acquired by 610 Sports. 610 will carry the majority of the games this season, while sister station 980 KMBZ will broadcast Sunday night games. Denny Matthews, Bob Davis, and Ryan Lefebrve call the games.
Since the arrival of Senior Vice President of Baseball Operations and General Manager Dayton Moore in 2006, there seem to be higher expectations for the "Boys in Powder Blue." Two of Moore's biggest moves during the off-season were the hiring of Trey Hillman as Manager and the acquisition of outfielder Jose Guillen.
In a press release dated February 5th 2008, Allan Davis, KCSP/KMBZ Operations Director, talked about the station's excitement for the spring programming. "March should be a fun month of listening on 610 Sports with Royals Spring Training games, KU in the hunt for a National Championship in men's basketball, and NASCAR Racing with the SPRINT CUP."
