Student Opportunity:
Adult Student Leadership Conference
By Eve L. Singleton

MCC-PV's Project Success, one of the federal TRIO Student Support Services programs, sponsored six students to attend the Adult Student Leadership Conference in St. Charles, Illinois, on Friday, October 19 through Sunday, October 21.

The conference itself was hosted by MAEOPP (Mid America Association of Educational Opportunity Program Personnel), which is a nonprofit institute of professionals with the specific purpose of evening the playing field of educational opportunity for disabled, low income and first generation students.

The theme for this year’s conference was “Making Connections.” Its primary focus was to stress the importance of making connections not only among individual members but between other TRIO schools and students.

Approximately 30 schools with TRIO programs participated in the event. The conference was divided into three sessions, each having at least five workshops to choose from. Topics included: Empowering Yourself, Study Abroad, and Keys to Academic Success.

The conference also included three motivational speakers. First to speak was Corey Taylor, who emphasized thinking and believing in possibilities. Next, Jason Dorsey gave pointers on landing your first job after graduation, or how to get a better job any time. Michael J. Dunphy then discussed ways of achieving personal and professional development.

Many connections were forged between various students and faculty from two- and four-year colleges, such as Marygrove College, Xavier University, and Wayne County Community College.

The TRIO Student Support Services programs exist to help each student fulfill career goals. For more information visit Project Success, located in PV's Student Development Center in CC223, past the Financial Aid office and Career Center.
