Around Campus:
Student Art Exhibit and Sale
By Sharai Bohannon

The annual Student Art Exhibit and Sale is back. The yearly event gives aspiring MCC - Penn Valley student-artists a chance to showcase their work and possibly win scholarships.

"The Friends of the Carter Art Center is awarding three $300 scholarships towards tuition for the fall of 2007," said Bernadette Torres the Carter Art Center Gallery Director. "Anybody who is a student, who's in the Student Art Show is eligible; they’re based on talent and not financial need."

The show promises to be the biggest the Carter Art Center has seen. “After our second day we were close to about 200 pieces. We average close to 360-370, and today with the influx it looks like we are going to have our maximum, which is great," said Torres. "We just purchased brand new walls. So we’ll have more space and it’s going to be bigger and better than before."

Torres continued, "The Friends of the Carter Art Center also set up a scholarship to buy $200 of mat board to help students in financial need that needed mat board, to encourage anybody to be a part of this.

"There is such diversity, and it definitely represents the work the students have done this semester, and last semester. I would say it's going to be a hard decision for the Friends to choose only three. It’s going to be very difficult for them to only pick out three pieces, out of all of this work," Torres said.

“I think it’s important for students to participate, to be here, because this might be the first time that they’ve actually seen their work matted, or mounted, up on the gallery walls," explained Torres. “I think it’s good for them to step away from the classroom and actually have their artwork up in the center of the gallery. They should be proud of their accomplishments. Sometimes a student just needs a little encouragement to push themselves forward to allow them to shine," Torres said.

The exhibit will run from April 17 – April 28, with three different opportunities to purchase the work seen throughout the gallery. The Friends of the Carter Art Center preview/reception is on April 26 from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., the MCC Faculty/Staff Sale is on April 27 from 10:00 a.m. until 6:00 p.m., and the show will come to a close with the Public Sale April 28 from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Want first pick of the art work, even though you’re not a Friend of the Carter Art Center? Well don’t worry, you can purchase your membership at the door during the event. It’s $35 dollars for a single membership, and $15 for a student membership. All proceeds from the artwork go to students, 75% to the artist and 25% to scholarships for other students.

Students are allowed to display only five pieces for judging, but extra work will be displayed for the last three days, giving you multiple chances to go and support your favorite artists.
