On Sunday, March 18, Penn Valley Community College will be hosting a memorial service dedicated to the 4th anniversary of the Iraq war. The memorial is taking place to "help ensure there is not a 5th anniversary" and will be sponsored by Phi Theta Kappa, with support from Spectrum.
Those who wish to participate should meet in the parking lot of PVCC at 1pm on the 18th. A vigil will be held, followed by a peace caravan, in which vehicles with signs and images of peace will make their way to the Lake City Army Ammunition Plant in Independence, MO.
The aim of the caravan is to protest the fact that LCAAP is the "largest manufacturer of small arms munitions in the world," thus giving Kansas Citians the opportunity to exhibit the view that democracy "cannot flow from the barrel of a gun."
The peace caravan will be followed by a 4pm rally, at which guest speakers will make their proclamations for peace.
Penn Valley students will also have the opportunity to send a personalized, written message to elected officials by filling out a Policies of Hope postcard. The cards will be collected and sent to the KC AFSC/ Iraq Task Force. They will then be distributed to area legislators.
Students, as well as anyone else who is interested in sharing their opinions on the Iraq war, can pick up a Policies of Hope postcard at the Office of Campus Life and Leadership in room CC 001.
For more information regarding the vigil and caravan, you can contact the Office of Campus Life and Leadership at (816) 759-4255 or the Iraq Task Force at iharritt@afsc.org.
