On January 2, Devney Mack, an adjunct history teacher at MCC - Penn Valley, died after a short illness. Mack had worked at Penn Valley for eight years.
"He was receiving treatment, and they thought he was going to pull through, but he didn't," said Karen Curls, MCC - PV Social Science Division Chair.
Mack was a military veteran and had done a lot of traveling, according to Curls. "He went to a lot of Asian countries," she said. Mack was also a Baptist minister and dean of a school of theology in Fort Scott, Kansas.
"He would probably want to be remembered as a person who understood the students," said Curls. "They seemed to feel that his classes were extremely fair, that he was student-friendly."
Daniel Reichardt, a former student of Mack's, agrees with this assessment. "He taught a great class, straight and to the point," said Reichardt.
The visitation took place on January 7, and the funeral on January 8.
