The Other Side of Holidays:
Alone and Homeless for the Holidays
By Juanita Ehioba

Johnson is his name; Dwayne Johnson. Johnson is homeless. He walks the streets in the day and sleeps in the graveyard at night.

"I feel alone," Johnson said. "No one cares, because I don’t have the things that they have. People are afraid of me, but I am human too," he said.

A few years ago, Johnson was stable, helping his parents in their home. When they passed away, one right after the other, things began to change for Johnson.

State agencies are not able to help Johnson, because there is no funding. When he goes to homeless shelters, Johnson says, there is no room.

"I can’t work because I don’t have any decent clothes to wear on an interview," he said.

The holidays are a time for giving to the needy: a Good Samaritan heart was touched and Johnson will be warm for the holiday season. He was given a coat, shoes, and clothing. Johnson said that he was very grateful for receiving the gifts.

But still, that is not enough. Johnson is in need of a home.

Johnson said, "Maybe one day I will become fortunate to have a warm home to go."
