Givng Back:
United Way Week at MCC Penn Valley
By Juanita Ehioba

MCC - Penn Valley will host its annual United Way Week from November 6-10. During the week, MCC - Penn Valley receives donations and pledges to help raise funds for agencies like the Red Cross, Marillac, and Niles Home for Children.

All MCC campuses have the United Way Week of fundraising at the same time, says Sallie Mathis, Student Services Specialist and event coordinator.

The kickoff will be Balloon Appreciation Day. "For a dollar or more, a person can purchase a balloon with a tag attached, on which they can write a message," explained Mathis.

There will be activities every day of the week, including a raffle, a prize drawing, and product sales by entrepeneurs, who will donate portions of their proceeds to United Way. There will also be a Vision Campaign, which supports the Rainbow Kids Fund and the Student Emergency Book Fund.

The climax on Friday will be a Pie in the Face bonanza. Staff, including faculty and administrators, are eagerly volunteering for creamy facials.

"The greatest gratification in United Way Week is the number of people helping through effort," Mathis says. "This is another opportunity for our students to get involved in a community service activity."
