SIFE: Students in Free Enterprise
By Richard Sheets

Students In Free Enterprise (SIFE) is a global, not-for-profit organization dedicated to creating economic opportunity through leadership training of students and implementing real world applications. The newest chapter is about to be opened right here in Kansas City at our sister school, MCC - Maple Woods.

SIFE is a free club for students who are interested in making a difference in their own communities and developing teamwork, leadership, and communication skills. This is accomplished by creating economic opportunities for companies and individuals within the community. The experience gained through these projects is what SIFE is primarily focused on.

Many Fortune 500 companies, such as GE, Ford, Pfizer, and AT&T, recognize SIFE and SIFE students as integral parts of their business models. Listing SIFE enrollment and what you have accomplished within the club also looks great on a resume and, in some cases, can be the deciding factor in your employment opportunities.

In addition, SIFE teams from around the country compete on an international level to obtain grants and powerful connections within the corporate world. For example, AFLAC, the insurance company, has an intern program for SIFE students in which students get to be personally mentored by the executive board of directors.

The introductory meeting was held on October 26, but it’s not too late for students who are interested to join. The next meeting will be held November 2 at 11:00am in Maple Woods Math and Science center.
