Getting Involved:
Student Ambassadors Bake Sale
By Brian Zahner

On October 25-27, the Penn Valley Community College Student Ambassadors held a bake sale in the lower level of the PVCC Cafeteria. The Oktoberfest bake sale was held from 9am-1pm each day. It had an assortment of treats, including cookies, cake, brownies, and much more. All goodies for sale were prepared and baked by the members of the Student Ambassadors.

The goal for the bake sale was to raise money for the group. Student Ambassadors is a group at PVCC that "provides a helping hand at the campus and the community," says Gwen Pate, a group advisor.

The Student Ambassadors will also be holding a bake sale in November to raise money for a Thanksgiving basket.

There was also an open mic during the first two days of the bake sale. The open mic was a great success and was used as a tool to recruit for the talent show that the Student Ambassadors are holding on December 8, just before finals begin at PVCC.

Pate said, "Some of our students here are a little less shy than others, so we just had to remind them of the student code of conduct, but it was great." The talent show is their biggest fundraiser of the year.

The Student Ambassadors are also very involved in the community. One of the things that they do every year is go to area high schools and sometimes middle schools. The group talks to students at the schools, describing the college and answering questions. Their main objective is to get more kids to enroll in college, whether or not it's PVCC.

Pate describes the Student Ambassadors as "a group looking for individuals who have an interest in becoming leaders in the community through hard work and community service." They're one of the only groups on campus with strict requirements to become a member.

To be a Student Ambassador, you must be a current PVCC student taking at least six credit hours. You must also have a college GPA of 2.5 or higher, and have a written letter of recommendation from an Administrator, faculty or full-time staff member at PVCC. You must have excellent communication skills and a willingness to perform volunteer service for at least three events per semester.

There are currently fourteen members in the Student Ambassadors; the maximum allowed is 20. To apply, go to the Office of Campus Life and Leadership in 001 Campus Center for an application. You can call 816.759.4255 for more information.
