Living in America we do not realize how scarce water is in other parts of the world. Water is something we do not have to worry about. Imagine having to put water on your list of worries. We get up in the morning and we just have to walk to another room in our house to get water. About 1.1 billion people around the world do not have this luxury.
Many women have to walk miles in order to get clean drinking water for their family. This task, one which must be done every morning, prevents these young women from going to school, taking care of their households, and pursuing a job that could bring more money to their families.
Though the conditions are worse in countries that are newly developed, water starvation is spread out all over the world. There is not just one area of concentration.
World Water Day is a day where we recognize this water crisis. In many cities, people walk for the water crisis. If a Walk is not being held in your city, there is also a virtual walk that you can find on the website (http://www.worldwaterday.net/).
The thought of solving the water crisis is very overwhelming. There are many people that need help. Water Day is only one day out of an entire year, and it may feel like there isn't much that can be done. But just be informed - just care! If you are informed and you care, then opportunities to help will arise. The awareness of World Water Day will grow, and maybe something can be done.
