On March 5, 2008, at about 1:50 pm, Reporting Officer, Shannon Craven, responded to a call at the Carter Arts Building Gallery on campus. Upon arrival, Bernadette Torres reported to Craven that she had opened the gallery at 12:30 that day. Then at 1:40 pm, Torres noticed that a sculpture was missing from its podium.
Torres told Craven that between the times of 12:30 and 1:50 a student worker, Teresa Klee, left the gallery unattended a few times - for only a brief period of time - to use the restroom and go to the mail room. This situation caused quite a disturbance, since the value of the lost item amounted to $1300.
With no clues as to who the culprit was or where the stolen item had been taken, the investigation ceased for the evening. However, the next day Klee decided to continue searching, checking in trash cans and lockers within the surrounding area of the theft.
On March 6, 2008, at 11:30 Craven was called back to the Carter Arts Building where Torres notified him that Klee's investigation had proven to be quite fruitful. Klee had indeed discovered the missing sculpture in PE locker #38.
For more information about crime rates on MCC campuses, the Public Safety Department suggests that students pick up the Student Right to Know, Campus Security, and Compliance Report 2007. This small booklet contains records from the past three years for a variety of crimes, from sexual offenses to robbery.
This report is published yearly by the FBI and can be obtained free of charge from the Public Safety Office.
